There is no standard, which is why two retreats at the same number can be very different purchases. Before you pay a deposit, get these in writing.
- Whether the number is per night or the whole stay. Marketplaces show both, side by side, and it is the single easiest thing to misread.
- How many nights it buys, and whether the arrival and departure days count as full ones.
- The room. Whether you are sharing it, and what a room of your own adds.
- Meals. Which ones are covered and which days they run.
- Getting there. Flights are almost never included; airport transfers sometimes are.
- What the practice program costs on top, if anything, and what happens to your money if you cancel.
The levers
What affects the price of a retreat
Length moves it first. A weekend and a week are different products, and the per-night figure usually falls the longer you stay.
Group size moves it next. A house full of women and a resort full of them do not cost the same to hold, and the smaller number is the more expensive one.
Then the place. A donation-run retreat centre and a private house in Miami or on Kauai sit at opposite ends of the same category, and the venue is usually most of the bill.
And finally how much is carried for you. A price that covers meals, transfers and a room of your own reads high next to a bare one, and often is not.
The honest answer
Is a spiritual retreat worth it
It depends entirely on what you are buying, and the honest version is that a retreat is a week of your life and a meaningful amount of money spent on attention rather than on anything you can show people afterwards.
What a well-run one gives you is time out of your usual roles, a small group that gets to know you, and practices you can keep using at home. What no retreat can promise you is an outcome. Anyone selling you a fix at any price is selling you something else.
The clearer test is the organizer. Ask who leads each practice, what is included, and what happens if you cancel. A retreat worth the money answers all three in writing and without being pushed.
