Which island should I choose?+
Kauai is the greenest, wettest and quietest, good for people who want forest and cliffs more than nightlife. The Big Island is the most varied, with active volcano, black sand, high desert and snow on the summits, and the most space per person. Oahu has everything including a city and the most crowds. Maui is beautiful and still carrying the aftermath of the two thousand twenty three Lahaina fire, so go informed and spend locally.
Is it respectful to do a spiritual retreat in Hawaii?+
It can be, and it depends entirely on how. Resting in a beautiful place is fine. Borrowing Native Hawaiian practice as decoration is not, and neither is walking onto a heiau or other sacred site because it looked good online. The straightforward version: learn who ran the land you are on, follow posted closures and local guidance without arguing, hire and buy locally, and do not treat living culture as a service on a schedule.
When is it cheapest to come?+
The shoulder weeks: late April through May, and September through the first half of November, avoiding the American holidays. Flights and rooms both drop noticeably and the weather in those windows is often the best of the year. The expensive periods are Christmas through early January, the spring break weeks in March, and midsummer.
