Sugilite: Meaning, Properties and How to Use It

Sugilite is read as protection for the heart specifically, rather than for the body or the home. Practice credits it with letting a sensitive person stay open in a rough environment, and with devotion to something larger than the day. It is the newest stone in the purple family and the rarest.

What tradition says

What is Sugilite known for?

Named for the Japanese geologist who found it in nineteen forty four, sugilite only reached the market in quantity after the Wessels mine in South Africa opened its purple zone in the nineteen seventies. Its reputation was built almost entirely by healers of the eighties and nineties, who paired it with nurses, teachers and carers. The consistent theme is working with other people's pain all day without hardening against it.

The practice

How do you use Sugilite?

Wear it on shift.

Nurses and teachers keep a small piece in a pocket for the whole working day and set it down somewhere at home when they come in, which marks the border between the two.

A short sitting with it before work, naming who you will be with today, is the usual practice attached to it.

Honest noteSugilite is genuinely rare and genuinely expensive, which means almost everything cheap sold under the name is something else. Dyed magnesite, dyed howlite, purple resin and charoite offcuts all circulate. Real sugilite is opaque, slightly waxy, and the purple is uneven with darker and lighter zones. A vivid even purple tumble at a low price is not sugilite.

Two more

What does Sugilite pair with?

Stones are kept in small sets rather than alone, and these two are the usual company for this one.

What it is kept for

What do people reach for Sugilite for?

The same stone, read through the thing you came here with.

Questions

What else do people ask about Sugilite?

Is sugilite the same as lavulite or royal azel?

Yes, those are trade names for the same mineral, coined by dealers to distinguish colour grades from the Wessels mine. Nothing about the stone changes with the label. Buy on colour, opacity and seller reputation rather than on the name printed on the tag.

What is a cheaper stone with a similar reputation?

Lepidolite for the softness and amethyst for the steadiness, worn together, are the standard substitute in practice. They do not have the same story, but the task they are given, staying kind while tired, is the same one.

Two ways on

One stone is a reminder, a library is a map.

A hundred and four stones and sixty four everyday uses, sorted the way a week arrives. If you came here through the body rather than the mineral, the seven chakras are the other way in.
