The versions people describe
The same image arrives in a few different shapes, and the shape is where the meaning lives. Find the one closest to the night you had.
1Why did it feel like a real visit?
Because these dreams genuinely differ from ordinary ones. People report clarity, a sense of health and peace in the person, few words, and one simple message. They remember them for years, unlike most dreams. Grief researchers have documented the pattern widely. Nothing about that requires you to decide what it proves. You are allowed to simply keep it.
2What if the dream comforted me?
Then take the comfort without arguing with it. Comforting dreams of the dead usually arrive once the first raw stage has passed, and people often describe them as a turning point — the moment they could think of the person without the ache arriving first. Write down what you were told. Those few words tend to matter later.
3What if the dreams leave me exhausted?
That happens too, and it does not mean anything is wrong with your grief. Dreams where the person is ill, angry, leaving again, or where you wake into the loss all over again, are common in the first year and after a sudden death. If they come nightly for months, wreck your sleep, or you dread going to bed, that is worth taking to a grief counsellor or a doctor.
