An astrology reading is an hour with an astrologer who reads the birth chart built from your date, time and place of birth. The chart itself is arithmetic that free tools calculate correctly. What does a live reading add to a free chart?

Almost no new data. A free calculator already gives you planets, signs, houses, aspects and usually a paragraph on each. What it cannot do is weigh them. A chart holds dozens of true statements about you, many of them contradicting each other, and the whole skill of the work is deciding which three are loud right now and which stay background noise for another decade. The second thing is dialogue. An astrologer says something, watches your face, hears you answer that this was true until my divorce, and rebuilds the thought on the spot. A page cannot rebuild itself. The third is that a person will ask what you actually came with, which is rarely the question you typed into a search box. What you carry out is language for a thing you could not name on the way in.

How does a session actually go?

You book a slot and send three things ahead, the date, the place and the time of birth to the minute as it stands on your certificate. Time is the one that matters, because an hour of error moves the entire house structure and with it most of what will be said about work and family. A good astrologer will tell you plainly what can and cannot be read if your time is unknown, instead of guessing. The hour itself is mostly talking. Some read from a printed wheel, some share a screen. Ask for a recording, because almost everyone offers one and you will remember a third of it otherwise. Expect the first ten minutes to be a description of you before you have said anything, which is how you find out whether the reading has any grip.

How do you prepare so the hour is not wasted?

Bring one question, not ten. The hour dissolves if you arrive with a list covering money, love, the move, your mother and whether to go back to school, because the astrologer will give each of them five polite minutes and you will leave with nothing you can use. How do you choose an astrologer?

First decide which conversation you want. A psychological or evolutionary astrologer works with meaning, repeating patterns and choice. A traditional or hellenistic one works with technique and speaks more concretely about timing. Jyotish is a separate system with its own zodiac and its own rules, not a flavour of the western one. None of them is the true version, but a person who cannot name what they practise is a bad sign. Then ask four things before you pay. Do you predict events or read conditions. What happens if I do not recognise myself in what you say. Do you send a recording. Do you take medical, legal or pregnancy questions, where the only good answer is no, that is for a doctor and a lawyer. Listen for how fast the no arrives.

Which red flags mean you should walk away?

Fear is the product in the bad version of this trade. If a reading opens with something dark hanging over your chart and closes with a service that removes it, you are not in a consultation, you are in a two step sales funnel. The words vary, a curse, a generational curse, negativity, a block on your money channel, an entity. The structure never varies. Watch for urgency as well, the window closes at the new moon and you must decide today, and for the upsell that appears exactly when you have opened up, a candle ritual, a clearing, a protection object priced at whatever they judge you can pay. A real astrologer can tell you a year looks hard. Selling you out of it is not something they are able to do, and the honest ones do not try.

Where should you start before paying anyone?

Build the free birth chart on this site first and sit with it for a week. You get your sun, moon and rising, the houses, the aspects and a plain reading of each, and that alone covers most of what people book a first session to hear. What you can do alone is learn the vocabulary, notice which descriptions make you uncomfortable in a recognising way, and find the one contradiction in the chart that refuses to resolve. How much does an astrology reading cost?

The spread is wide and it says less than you would hope. It runs from about the cost of a dinner out to about the cost of a weekend away, and what moves the number is reputation, waiting list and marketing rather than accuracy. Price is not a quality signal in either direction. Ask what is included, the hour, a recording, questions afterwards, and judge that instead.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the houses, yes. Without a time the rising sign and the whole house structure are unreliable, and that is most of what gets said about work, home and family. Your sun, in most cases your moon, and the aspects between planets still hold. A good astrologer will tell you what drops out rather than guess, and some offer to rectify the time from events in your life, which is separate and much longer work.

Is an online reading worse than meeting in person?

No. The chart is identical, the conversation is identical, and video gives you a recording and no travel. The only real difference is discipline. In a room it is harder to answer a message halfway through, so if you know yourself, close everything else and treat the hour as if you had left the house for it.

Can an astrologer tell me when I will meet someone?

Some will name a window, and you should treat it as a description of conditions rather than an event. Claims like that are almost never checked afterwards, and the misses are quietly forgotten while the one hit becomes the story. What a chart can usefully describe is what you are drawn to and what you keep repeating. The date is the part of the promise to trust least.
