How many full moons are there in a year?
Twelve in most years and thirteen in some, because the lunar cycle is a little shorter than a calendar month. That extra one is what people mean by a blue moon.
Why does each full moon have a different name?
The names come from farming and hunting calendars that tracked the season rather than the sky. Wolf, snow, harvest and the rest describe what the month was like for the people who named it, not anything about the moon itself.
Is a supermoon different?
Only in size, and barely. A supermoon is a full moon near the closest point of its orbit, so the disc looks a few percent larger. Nothing about the practice changes.
