How is reiki training structured?
Almost every school uses three levels, whatever names it gives them. Level one is about your own hands and your own body, the standard positions, daily self practice and usually a first session on another student. Level two introduces the symbols and the idea of working at a distance, and this is where most people who practise on others stop. Level three, often called master or master teacher, is sometimes split into a practitioner tier and a teaching tier, and it is what lets you run classes yourself. None of this is regulated. No country licenses reiki practitioners, nobody sets the hours, and two certificates with identical wording can stand for a weekend or for two years. What the paper tells a client is that somebody taught you.

What is an attunement, and does lineage matter?
An attunement, sometimes called an initiation or a placement, is the ritual moment when a teacher is said to open a student’s ability to channel reiki. In practice it is short and quiet. You sit with your eyes closed, the teacher moves around you, touches your head, shoulders or hands, breathes, makes gestures over your palms, and a few minutes later it is finished. Some people feel heat or a wave of emotion, many feel nothing. Lineage is the chain of teachers standing behind that moment, traced from Usui through Hayashi and Takata and onward. A teacher who can name their line is showing you they take the tradition seriously and know where they stand in it. That is a courtesy and a good sign, not a guarantee of skill or of honesty.
