Sunstone: Meaning, Properties and How to Use It

Sunstone is the stone of being visibly yourself. Tradition credits it with warmth that other people can feel, with the nerve to lead and with recovering an appetite for things after a flat stretch. It is the piece given to people who have gone quiet and want to come back.

What tradition says

What is Sunstone known for?

Viking navigators are said to have used a sunstone to find the sun through cloud, though the stone in the sagas was probably calcite rather than this feldspar. Oregon sunstone carries actual copper platelets, which is why it flashes orange when you turn it. Native tradition on the plains treated it as the blood of a wounded warrior. Practitioners pair it with citrine and read it as the daylight opposite of moonstone.

The practice

How do you use Sunstone?

Wear it where it catches light, a ring or an earring rather than a pocket stone, because visibility is the point.

Keep one on the desk through a week when you have to be the one who speaks first.

In winter, hold it in morning light for a minute before the day starts.

Honest noteA great deal of what is sold as sunstone is goldstone, manmade glass with copper flecks suspended in it, and the glitter gives it away because it is too regular and too dense. Real sunstone has an uneven schiller. The mineral itself is feldspar, so it cleaves, chips and fades in long sun.

Two more

What does Sunstone pair with?

Stones are kept in small sets rather than alone, and these two are the usual company for this one.

What do people reach for Sunstone for?

The same stone, read through the thing you came here with.

Questions

What else do people ask about Sunstone?

How do I tell sunstone from goldstone?

Goldstone glitters evenly all over, like a suspension, and it is always flawless and cheap. Real sunstone shows a directional sheen that appears and disappears as you turn it, with an uneven scatter of platelets and often small internal cracks. Glass also warms in the hand faster.

What is sunstone paired with?

Moonstone most often, as a day and night pair, one in each hand or kept together in a dish. Carnelian if you want the push without the visibility. Practitioners warn against pairing it with heavy grounding stones, because the readings pull against each other and you get neither.

Two ways on

One stone is a reminder, a library is a map.

A hundred and four stones and sixty four everyday uses, sorted the way a week arrives. If you came here through the body rather than the mineral, the seven chakras are the other way in.
