What is Howlite known for?
Howlite was found in Nova Scotia in 1868 by Henry How, a chemist called out to a gypsum quarry because the miners had hit something their tools would not cut. It is white with grey veins that look like marble. Because it is porous and cheap it became the standard material for imitating turquoise, which is most of what you meet in shops. The lore is modern, calm and unglamorous.

No, and the confusion is deliberate on the sellers' side. Howlite is white and takes dye beautifully, so most cheap blue turquoise beads are dyed howlite. Check the drill holes, where a dyed stone shows white inside. Turquoise at turquoise prices is rare and sold with paperwork.
Can I sleep with howlite under my pillow?
