Crown Chakra: Meaning, Blocked Signs and How to Open It

Sahasrara is placed at the top of the head, and in many descriptions slightly above it, outside the body altogether. The tradition credits it with the sense of belonging to something larger than your own biography, and with the relief of not having to hold everything together yourself. Unlike the six centres below it, this one is rarely given a practice with a goal, it is described as what remains when effort stops. Even its seed sound is contested, some lineages teach silence here, others OM or AUM, others the breathy visarga, and no lineage holds the final word.

How this is described

What do people mean by a blocked crown chakra?

Four descriptions people give, borrowed from the way the tradition talks. None of them is a test, nothing here is measurable, and a state that lasts belongs to a doctor rather than to a diagram.

Everything is fine on paper and none of it seems to be for anything.

You have read forty books on meaning and cannot sit still for four minutes.

Awe has gone flat, and a wide view from a mountain reads as scenery.

You hold the whole thing up alone and cannot imagine being carried by anything.

Three practices

What to actually do this week.

Short, repeatable and dull on purpose. Ten to fifteen minutes a day for a week does more than one long session you never repeat.

Ten minutes of doing nothing to the breath

Sit with the eyes closed and leave the breath completely alone for ten minutes, timer on. No counting, no lengthening, no technique. Your only task is to notice each breath arriving without arranging it. This is harder than any counted pattern, and the boredom that shows up in minute three is part of the practice rather than a failure.

Twenty minutes flat on the floor

Lie on your back on a firm floor, blanket under the head, legs a little apart, palms up. Set a timer for twenty minutes and stay. Let the weight of the body go into the ground and stop correcting your posture. If you fall asleep, you needed the sleep. Get up in stages, rolling to one side first.

Choosing your own crown sound, or none

Since the lineages disagree about the crown sound, try both honestly. One week, sit and chant OM three times, then stay quiet for eight minutes. The next week, skip the chant and sit for the same eight minutes from the first second. Keep a two line note each day. After a fortnight you will know which one your attention prefers.

Three postures

Where the body meets the theme.

One standing, one opening, one resting. Take them slowly, breathe into the area the centre is placed in, and stop where the stretch turns into pain.

Seated cross-legged with the hands resting on the knees, seen from behind

Sukhasana, easy seat

Sit on a cushion high enough that the knees fall below the hips, and the spine stops fighting you.

Savasana, corpse pose

The hardest pose in the room, because it asks for nothing and gives you nowhere to try harder.

Sirsasana, headstand

Not a beginner pose, and it is skipped entirely with neck or eye trouble or high blood pressure.

Questions

What people ask about the crown chakra.

What is the bija mantra for the crown chakra?

There is no single agreed answer, and that is the honest reply rather than a dodge. Several tantric sources give silence, the absence of sound, as the crown seed. Others teach OM or AUM. Others again give the visarga, a soft breath written as two dots. Pick the version your own teaching line uses, and treat lists that print only one as incomplete.

Should I work on the crown chakra first?

Most teachers say no, and the reason is practical rather than mystical. The top of the map is the least concrete part of it, so starting there tends to produce interesting thoughts and very little change in how you live. Beginning at the base, with sleep, food, money and the body, gives the rest somewhere to stand.

Is feeling nothing during meditation a sign of a blocked crown chakra?

Feeling nothing is the normal texture of most sitting, and experienced practitioners spend years there. Sensation is not the measure, there is no measure, and nothing about a flat session diagnoses anything. What tends to show progress is offstage, how you handle a rude email or a long queue. Keep the practice small enough that you actually do it.

Two ways on

A centre opens through a week of small repetitions, not through reading.

Ten minutes, the same ten every day: breath into one area, one posture, one syllable, five minutes of writing. A week of that moves more than an evening of reading.
