Crystals for the New Moon
Moonstone, labradorite and obsidian are the three stones traditionally used at the new moon. Where the full moon is for finishing, this night is for naming one thing you intend to begin. The dark sky is the whole metaphor: nothing to see yet. A stone here is a bookmark you will return to in two weeks and again in four.
The six
Which six stones does tradition name for this?
Six, not sixty. Each one carries a different reason, so you can pick the reason that sounds like your week rather than buying the whole row.
Moonstone
Present at both ends of the cycle, which is the point of it. At the new moon it stands for the part of an intention that is still entirely private.
Labradorite
Dull until it is turned, which is exactly the condition of a plan nobody has seen yet. People keep it for intentions they are not ready to announce.
Obsidian
Black volcanic glass, the traditional stone of the honest look. Before a new intention it is used for the unglamorous question of why the last one did not happen.
Citrine
The warm counterpoint to the dark stones. A new moon ritual that is only about shortcomings gets abandoned by spring, and this one keeps some appetite in the set.
Smoky Quartz
Grounding, and kept for people whose new moon intentions are consistently three sizes too big. It stands for the version of the plan that is actually achievable.
Carnelian
The stone of the first step. An intention written and never acted on is just a nicely phrased regret, and this is the stone that argues for doing something small this week.
The practice
How do you work with the set?
Write one intention, in one sentence, on a small piece of paper.
Not a list.
Put a stone on top and leave both somewhere you will pass daily for the next month.
At the following new moon, read the sentence and write underneath what actually happened.
Keep the papers.
After a year they tell you something no app will.
Read here as a language of symbols. Medical, legal and financial questions belong with a professional.
Questions
What else do people ask about this?
How many intentions can I set?
One. A list of six is the standard way this practice fails, because nothing on it is specific enough to act on and nothing gets reviewed. One sentence per moon, twelve a year, and you will finish more of them than you expect.
What if I missed the exact night?
Do it the next evening. The dark phase runs for a couple of days either side, and more importantly the value of the ritual is the reflection, not the astronomy. Missing the exact hour is not a reason to skip a month.

Two ways on
A need is one door in, a stone is another.
Six names, and behind each one the tradition that gave it the job and the plain limit of what it cannot do. The body reads the same set differently, and the seven centres are that reading.
- 104
- stones, each with what tradition says
- 64
- everyday uses, six stones under each
- 7
- centres, the same set read through the body
