Crystals for Clarity
Clear quartz, fluorite and sodalite are the three stones traditionally kept for mental clarity. Between them they map the usual problem: too much input, too many half formed thoughts, and no order imposed on either. The stones are prompts to write things down rather than continue thinking in circles, which is the only reliable way clarity has ever arrived.
The six
Which six stones does tradition name for this?
Six, not sixty. Each one carries a different reason, so you can pick the reason that sounds like your week rather than buying the whole row.
Clear Quartz
Colourless and transparent, which is why it became the emblem of a clear head. Kept on the desk beside the notebook, since the two objects do the same job.
Fluorite
Named the stone of order in modern practice, partly for its cubic habit. People keep it for the stage where the problem is sorting rather than understanding.
Sodalite
Deep blue with white veins, traditionally the stone of rational thought. It is the one people reach for when they have been running on feeling for a fortnight.
Lapis Lazuli
The old stone of scholars and scribes. It belongs here for clarity that has to be written or spoken rather than merely felt, which is most of the useful kind.
Apatite
Associated with appetite for learning and with cutting through mental fog. Keep the blue form and treat it gently, since it is soft and scratches against harder stones.
Kyanite
Bladed and strongly directional, splitting along one plane only. That single quality is why it is kept for clarity: it is a stone that goes one way and no other.
The practice
How do you work with the set?
Put the stone on a blank page.
Write the question you are actually stuck on, in one sentence, and stop.
Leave it overnight.
The next morning read the sentence and write the first three answers without editing.
Most confusion is a question that was never written plainly, and the stone is simply the weight that holds the page open.
Read here as a language of symbols. Medical, legal and financial questions belong with a professional.
Questions
What else do people ask about this?
Which stone if my head is foggy rather than busy?
Apatite or clear quartz, and then honesty about sleep. Fog is far more often a rest and blood sugar problem than a thinking problem, and no stone fixes a fortnight of five hour nights. If it persists for weeks, mention it to a doctor.
Can I keep several clarity stones on one desk?
Two at most, and put them at opposite ends. A cluster of blue stones turns into visual noise, and visual noise is the exact thing you were trying to reduce. Kyanite and apatite also scratch easily, so keep them from touching.

The needs that sit next to this one.
Two ways on
A need is one door in, a stone is another.
Six names, and behind each one the tradition that gave it the job and the plain limit of what it cannot do. The body reads the same set differently, and the seven centres are that reading.
- 104
- stones, each with what tradition says
- 64
- everyday uses, six stones under each
- 7
- centres, the same set read through the body
