What is Larimar known for?
Larimar is a blue pectolite found in one small area of the Dominican Republic and nowhere else on earth. A local man rediscovered it in 1974 and named it for his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for sea. Because the lore is so recent, almost all of it is written by modern crystal authors, who give it the throat and the quality of unhurried speech. Divers still work the deposit by hand.

Why is larimar so expensive?
One deposit, hand mining and rising demand. There is no second source to open if the Dominican mine slows. Good deep blue with clean white patterning is the part that costs most.
How do I spot fake larimar?
Dyed howlite is the usual substitute and it shows grey web veins rather than soft white patches. Real larimar has a slightly waxy look and no sharp dark lines. If the price seems too kind, it is.
