New Mexico calls itself the Land of Enchantment and mostly gets away with it, because of the light. High desert at seven thousand feet under thin dry air gives a clarity that painters moved here for and never left. Santa Fe and Taos sit in the north and have long hosted people who came here to be quiet.
The place
Adobe walls hold heat and glow apricot at the end of the day, which is why every building seems the same colour as the ground. The air is dry to the point of crackling and smells of piñon smoke almost year round. Distances read wrong: a mesa that looks an hour away is a day away. Pueblo, Hispano and Anglo life share this ground, in towns standing long before most of the country.
Timing
September and October are the best months: warm days, cold nights, golden aspens and clear air. Late spring brings weeks of hard dry wind that coats everything in dust. July and August are the monsoon, with dramatic afternoon storms and a brief green. Winter is cold, bright and very quiet, with snow in the north and the cheapest rates.
Heavy moisturiser, lip balm and a saline nasal spray, because this is drier than most people have experienced. Layers for a thirty degree daily swing. Strong sunscreen and a hat for the altitude. A swimsuit and a quick dry towel for hot springs, and shoes that handle loose gravel.

Santa Fe is the bigger, easier one: galleries, restaurants, an airport shuttle from Albuquerque an hour away, and enough infrastructure that you never have to plan hard. Taos is two hours further north, smaller, rougher and far quieter, with a stronger pull for people who want to be left alone. If this is your first visit, Santa Fe. If you want silence, Taos.
Yes, more than people expect, because nobody thinks of a desert as high country. Santa Fe sits at around seven thousand feet and Taos higher, which is enough for a first night headache, restless sleep and quick dehydration. The dryness multiplies it. Drink constantly, go gently for two days, and remember that alcohol hits noticeably harder up here.
Cold enough to catch people out in every season. Dry air at altitude holds no heat, so a day of eighty five Fahrenheit can drop to the forties overnight, and in winter below freezing is normal in the north. This is why every packing list here is about layers rather than one coat. If you are sitting outside after sunset, you will want more than you think.
