Mountains or coast for a quiet week?+
The mountains, almost always. Western North Carolina has the elevation, the forest and the established infrastructure for this kind of trip. The coast is beautiful, particularly the Outer Banks, but it is flat, wind exposed, heavily seasonal and built around holiday rentals rather than quiet. If you want water and stillness together, pick a mountain place near a river instead.
How much does elevation change the weather?+
More than people expect. Asheville sits around two thousand feet, but peaks nearby pass six thousand, and the difference is routinely fifteen to twenty degrees Fahrenheit plus wind. A humid ninety degree afternoon in the valley can be a pleasant seventy on a ridge. This is the local trick for surviving August, and the reason to carry a jacket in a bag that felt unnecessary in the car park.
Is it safe to walk these trails alone?+
Yes, and thousands of solo women do it every season. The realistic hazards are getting lost on unsigned forest roads, sudden thunderstorms, slick rock near waterfalls, which is what actually injures people here, and no phone signal in the hollows. Black bears exist and avoid you. Download an offline map, tell someone your plan, keep well back from the tops of falls, and you have covered nearly all of it.
