Greece works because of the light and the water, and everyone who has been says the same thing about the light without being able to explain it. It is hard, white and specific, and it makes edges look carved. Most of the retreat life sits on the Aegean islands, where the sea stays swimmable into November.
The place
Salt dries on your arms in white lines and you leave it there. Stone steps stay warm under bare feet long after the sun has gone. The sea is colder than it looks for three seconds and then perfect, and you can see your own shadow on the sand four metres down. The monasteries of Meteora balance on rock pillars, and Mount Athos admits men only, which surprises people every year.
Timing
May, June, September and early October are the sweet spots, warm sea, workable heat and islands that still function. July and August bring temperatures above thirty five, packed ferries and the meltemi wind, which can cancel sailings for days at a time. Winter empties the small islands almost completely, with many places shut from November to April.
Shoes with grip for marble steps and goat paths, which are slippery and everywhere. Shoulders covered for monasteries and a skirt or wrap for those that require one. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat that survives wind, and a light jacket for ferry decks and evenings that turn cool fast.

Greece is in the Schengen area, so short visits fall under the ninety days in any one hundred eighty rule and many passports are visa exempt for that. Everyone else applies to a Greek consulate in advance. Island hopping does not change anything, it is all one country. Verify your nationality on the official Greek consular pages.
Very. Island life is calm, people are direct and helpful, and solo women travel here in large numbers. Pickpocketing happens in central Athens and on the metro. The bigger practical risks are heat, which is underestimated every summer, scooter rentals on gravel roads, and ferry cancellations that strand you when the wind rises.
Work backwards from how much silence you want. Paros and Naxos give infrastructure, good food and easy connections with moderate crowds. Amorgos, Folegandros and Ikaria are quieter and harder to reach, which is the point. Crete is large enough to hold both, mountains inland and empty beaches in the southwest. Check the ferry timetable before the accommodation.
