Spiritual Retreats in Thailand: where sitting is ordinary

Thailand makes retreating easy in a way few countries manage, with warm water, good food and a Buddhist culture where taking time to sit is ordinary rather than eccentric. The northern hills hold forest monasteries that have taught foreigners for generations, often in strict and simple conditions.

The place

What is it like there?

Heat here is a texture, not a temperature. It presses on your shoulders the moment you step outside and does not lift until after dark. In the north the monastery floor is cool tile under bare feet and the bell is struck at four while it is still black outside. On Koh Samui and Koh Phangan the fasting weeks sometimes run within earshot of a very different kind of party.

Timing

When should you go?

November to February is the cool dry window, the best time almost everywhere, with the north genuinely chilly at night. March to May is very hot, and the northern burning season brings smoke haze to Chiang Mai. The southwest monsoon runs May to October on the Andaman side, while the Gulf islands get their heaviest rain in November and December.

What to pack for this ground

Clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, including something white if you join a monastery course, since many ask for it. Slip-on shoes, a fast-drying towel, mosquito repellent and electrolyte sachets. Bring a thin long-sleeve layer for fierce air conditioning on buses and night boats.

Which centers actually stand there?

Real organizations that run their own programs on their own property, each with its own dates and its own schedule.

Questions

What people ask before they go

How long can I stay without a visa?

Many nationalities receive a visa exemption stamp on arrival good for a stay of up to sixty days, often extendable once at an immigration office. Longer or repeated stays need a proper visa from a Thai embassy. Thailand has changed these terms several times recently, so check the official embassy page close to your travel date.

Is Thailand safe for solo travellers?

Yes, and it is one of the most travelled countries in Asia for exactly that reason. Serious crime against visitors is uncommon. Motorbike accidents are the leading cause of tourist deaths here by a wide margin, so if you cannot already ride one, do not learn on a Thai road. Check that your insurance covers what you plan to do.

What is expected at a monastery course?

Modest dress, often white, no shoes indoors, no touching monks if you are a woman, and no food after midday on stricter programmes. Early rising, long sitting and silence are the shape of the day. Donations rather than fees are the norm and nobody will name a figure, so give what the stay was worth to you.
