Retreats

Spiritual Retreats in Morocco: three hours away, and elsewhere

Morocco is the closest place to Europe where everything feels genuinely different, and that dislocation is half of what a retreat needs. Three hours from several European capitals you are in the High Atlas with Berber villages stacked on the slope, or in a Sahara whose night silence you have never met.

What it is actually likeWhen to goWhat to pack
A riad courtyard with a still water basin and zellij tile, deep shade and one shaft of sun.

The place

What is it like there?

The medina is narrow enough that a passing cart puts you against a wall, and you learn to listen for wheels. Mint, cumin, leather, orange blossom, all within thirty steps. Then you push a studded door and the noise stops dead: courtyard, tile, shade, water in a basin. This is a Muslim country with conservative norms outside the tourist quarters, and the call to prayer and the hammam shape the day whether or not they are yours.

Timing

When should you go?

March to May and September to November are the reliable windows, warm days and cool nights in Marrakech and workable conditions in the Atlas and the desert. Summer inland is severe, regularly above forty degrees, and desert camps become unpleasant. Winter is cold at altitude with snow in the High Atlas, while the coast stays mild and grey.

What to pack for this ground

Loose clothing covering shoulders and knees, which is comfort as much as respect, and a scarf that works for sun, dust and mosques. Proper walking shoes for Atlas paths, a warm layer for desert nights, and cash in dirhams since many places take nothing else.

Questions

What people ask before they go

Do I need a visa?

Many nationalities enter visa free for stays of up to ninety days and simply get a stamp on arrival. Others must apply in advance. Your passport generally needs six months of validity. Rules differ meaningfully by nationality, so confirm yours with a Moroccan consulate rather than relying on a general list.

Is it safe for women travelling alone?

Serious crime against tourists is low and many women travel Morocco solo without incident. Persistent street attention and unsolicited guides in the medinas are common and wearing you down is the tactic, so a firm no and walking on works better than politeness. Use licensed guides, agree taxi fares first, and avoid unlit medina lanes late.

What changes during Ramadan?

The whole rhythm. Many restaurants close during daylight, hours shift, people are fasting and the evening meal becomes the centre of the day. Tourist areas keep working and you are not expected to fast, but eating and drinking openly in the street is poor form. Some retreats pause entirely. The dates move each year, so check before booking.
