Mexico gives you two distinct retreat countries. The Riviera Maya around Tulum is the famous one, Caribbean water and cenotes and a wellness industry that grew faster than the infrastructure under it. The quieter country is inland, Oaxaca and the highlands, where the pace drops the day you arrive.
The place
The limestone under the Yucatan is full of holes, and you climb down a ladder into one, out of thirty five degree air into water so clear it looks like you are floating in nothing. Back on the surface the heat closes over you again like a hand. Inland in Oaxaca the air is dry and high and smells of woodsmoke and toasted chilli. Tulum itself is expensive and heavily built now, and sometimes patchy on both electricity and water.
Timing
November to April is dry and reliable on both coasts and in the highlands, and it is peak season with peak prices. Hurricane season on the Caribbean side runs June to November with the real risk concentrated in September and October. Oaxaca gets afternoon rain in summer but stays pleasant. Yucatan heat and humidity in May are punishing.
Biodegradable sunscreen and soap, since cenotes ban the ordinary kind and the rule is enforced. Water shoes for sharp limestone, a light long-sleeve layer against sun and mosquitoes, and a warm top for highland evenings. Carry small peso notes, and keep electrolytes handy in the Yucatan heat.

The region
Questions
Many nationalities enter without one for tourism and receive a stay decided by the immigration officer, which can be much shorter than the maximum, so keep your entry document and check the number of days written on it. Others need a visa arranged in advance. Verify your case with a Mexican consulate before you book.
Safety in Mexico is regional, not national, and the difference between states is enormous. Oaxaca city and the Yucatan are among the calmer parts and receive millions of visitors. Read your own government's advisory by state before booking, use registered taxis or apps, avoid intercity driving at night, and do not carry more cash than a day needs.
Only with someone who treats it as ceremony rather than a spa add-on. The lodge gets extremely hot and dark and doors are sometimes kept closed for long rounds, which is where people get into trouble. A responsible leader screens for heart conditions, pregnancy and blood pressure, keeps water available and lets anyone step out without argument. If that is not offered, skip it.
