What are the entry rules?+
Many passports get up to ninety days on arrival with no visa, and border officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel and sometimes for accommodation details. Your passport needs validity beyond your stay. Allowances differ by nationality and get adjusted, so confirm yours with the Costa Rican consulate before you buy tickets.
Is it safe for a woman travelling alone?+
Broadly yes, and the retreat coast is used to solo travellers. Theft from cars and unattended bags on beaches is the common problem, so carry little. The two things that actually hurt people are rip currents on the Pacific, which are strong and constant, and driving unlit mountain roads after dark. Swim where others swim, arrive in daylight.
Do I need to surf already?+
No. Most weeks that pair surf with practice assume beginners and the beaches around Nosara and Tamarindo have gentle sandy breaks for exactly that. What helps more is basic swimming confidence in moving water. Spanish is not required on this coast, though a hundred words of it changes how people talk to you.
